THE DOMINICAN COFFEE CULTURE
Each afternoon, Dominicans gather in their small wooden huts to share a cup of Cafe Molido, Santo Domingo. Stores and business close from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. to allow for lunch and a cup of warm, aromatic coffee.
Often, coffee is used to invite others into your home for fellowship. While walking down the dirt roads or streets, you can smell the sweet aroma of coffee brewing everywhere you go.
THE DOMINICAN COFFEE RECIPE
Dominicans brew their coffee in an iron percolator called a "Greca". This ensures the strongest flavor and a deep rich color. If you don't own an iron percolator, a glass percolator can be used. Or you may choose to use a traditional American coffee maker.
Preparing The Coffee...
- If you have whole coffee beans, grind them
- Add coffee grounds to your Greca, glass percolator, or your favorite coffee maker
- Sprinkle some ground nutmeg on top of the coffee grounds (this is the secret ingredient)
- Brew!
Serving The Coffee...
When serving the coffee, Dominicans add sugar (and lots of it!). This sweetens the strong flavor of the coffee. They do not use creamer.
Because of the coffee's strength, Dominicans prefer to serve the coffee in small 3 oz. cups.
